Feasibility Study Completed for Uganda’s First Floating Solar Project at Isimba HPP
Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL), in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD), the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), and the Ministry of Water and Environment, has officially received the final feasibility study report for Uganda’s pioneering floating solar project at the Isimba Hydropower Plant.
A consortium of international and local experts, including SWECO, Innosea, 8.2, and Uganda based BIMCO, carried out the comprehensive study. Their collaborative effort has laid the foundation for developing a 10-megawatt (MW) pilot floating solar project, marking a significant milestone in the country’s transition toward innovative and sustainable energy solutions.
According to the project timeline, detailed engineering designs and tender documentation are expected to be finalized and ready by June 2025. This next phase will enable UEGCL and its partners to move forward with the procurement and implementation processes.
Musa Mukulu, representing UEGCL, commended the consulting teams for their professionalism and technical expertise. He emphasized UEGCL’s commitment and preparedness to lead the deployment of this groundbreaking renewable energy project, which aligns with Uganda’s broader goals for energy diversification, climate resilience, and sustainable development.
The floating solar project at Isimba HPP will not only optimize the use of existing water infrastructure but also serve as a model for similar future initiatives across the region.
