Parliamentary Committee Conducts Oversight Visit to Isimba Hydropower Plant (183 MW).
On February 10th, the Parliamentary Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, a delegation of parliamentarians conducted a comprehensive oversight visit to the Isimba Hydropower Plant (IHPP), aiming to thoroughly evaluate its operational status, maintenance initiatives, and overall contribution to Uganda’s electricity supply. This delegation, headed by Committee Chairperson Hon. Herbert Edmund Ariko, received a warm welcome from the Minister of State for Energy, Hon. Sidronius Okaasai Opolot, who emphasized the importance of the visit.
The oversight was prompted by serious concerns regarding structural defects identified in the plant’s spillway stilling basin. These defects pose significant safety risks to the dam and, consequently, to the surrounding communities. Addressing these issues is urgent to ensure public safety and maintain the structural integrity of this critical infrastructure.
During the visit, the parliamentarians engaged in detailed discussions with officials and technical teams from the Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL), under the leadership of CEO Dr. Eng. Harrison Mutikanga. The discussions focused on several vital aspects, including the plant’s operational performance, efficiency metrics, ongoing maintenance strategies, and the various challenges currently impacting electricity generation at Isimba HPP.
This visit served not only as a check on the plant’s condition but also highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring reliable energy supply and infrastructure safety in Uganda. Additionally, the visit served as an orientation opportunity for new Committee members, allowing them to better understand the sector’s critical infrastructure and challenges firsthand.
