April 8, 2026

UEGCL hosted the French Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Virginie Leroy, together with a delegation from Agence Française de Development (AFD) at Nalubaale-Kiira Hydropower Plants.

The visit aimed at assessing the progress of the rehabilitation project at the complex, underscoring the strong partnership between Uganda and France in advancing sustainable energy infrastructure.

This project will be enabled through financing arrangements totaling approximately EUR 170 from  French Development Agency (AFD), European Investment Bank( EIB)  and the European Union. “The Nalubaale -Kiira rehabilitation project demonstrates the strength of the partnership between France, Uganda and all the other countries in the European Union, built on shared priorities; inclusive and sustainable growth, energy access and climate action”, she said

Key interventions in this project include modernization of electromechanical systems, enhanced dam safety measures, and the strategic need to increase spilling capacity to safely manage extreme hydrological conditions.

This partnership positions Uganda to better respond to climate change while maximizing clean energy generation and safeguarding communities downstream.

UEGCL reaffirms its commitment to delivering this project efficiently, transparently, and in alignment with international environmental and social standards.

UEGCL once again extend its sincere appreciation to the Government of France, AFD, and the European Union for their invaluable support in powering Uganda’s sustainable energy future.
