The article reports on the rehabilitation of Uganda’s Nalubaale hydropower plant in Jinja, aimed at modernizing the country’s oldest electricity generation facility. The project has secured at least €85 million in funding from the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the European Union (EU) as part of a larger €170 million financing plan for upgrading Uganda’s aging power infrastructure.
The rehabilitation will be carried out in phases, including upgrading old monitoring systems and substation equipment from the 1950s, replacing turbines and generators, and repairing structural damage in the plant. Nalubaale is considered strategically important because it is the first dam on the Nile and plays a key role in regulating water flow to downstream plants like Kiira, Bujagali, Isimba, and Karuma. The upgrades are expected to extend its operational life by at least 30 more years.
