The Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, chaired by Hon. Dan Kimosho, conducted an oversight visit to the 600 MW Karuma Hydropower Plant to assess the status of the dam, completion of outstanding works and defects, and the plant’s energy dispatch in relation to its installed generation capacity.
The Committee also assessed progress on the resettlement of Project Affected Persons (PAPs) and the implementation of Community Development Action Plans associated with the Karuma Hydropower Project.
The Minister of State received the Committee for Energy, Hon. Sidronius Okaasai, together with the Chief Executive Officer of Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL), Dr. Eng. Harrison E. Mutikanga, and members of UEGCL’s senior management team.
The oversight visit commenced with a guided tour of key plant facilities, including the control room, dam and intake structures, and the underground powerhouse. The tour provided members of the Committee with firsthand insight into the plant’s operations, generation infrastructure and associated facilities.
The tour was followed by an engagement session during which UEGCL provided updates on the status of the plant and responded to issues raised by the Committee. Discussions focused on key matters arising from the oversight mission, including the plant’s operational status, outstanding works, energy generation and dispatch, resettlement of Project Affected Persons, and community development initiatives.
The visit underscored the importance of continued collaboration between Parliament and UEGCL in strengthening oversight, addressing outstanding project matters and supporting the sustainable contribution of Karuma Hydropower Plant to Uganda’s electricity generation capacity.
