Overview

The 1st edition of GENEWS introduces readers to UEGCL’s Vision and Mission: to be the leading power producer in the Great Lakes Region and to generate reliable, affordable electricity for socio-economic development. The editorial highlights the company’s strategic achievements and foundational steps, including robust human resource development, strict contract administration of flagship projects, pursuit of ISO certification, strategic partnerships, and the UEGCL rebrand.

Significant progress is reported on the Karuma (600 MW) and Isimba (183 MW) hydropower projects, both exceeding 50% physical completion, alongside updates on Muzizi (44.7 MW) and Nyagak III (5.4 MW), reflecting efforts to diversify Uganda’s generation portfolio and integrate renewable energy sources such as solar and geothermal. Preparatory work for Operations and Maintenance (O&M) has been formalized, with an indigenous strategy aimed at efficient, cost-effective plant management.

The issue emphasizes strategic partnerships with stakeholders, including government ministries, regulators, development partners (KfW, AfD, Norwegian Embassy), contractors, and local communities, which have been critical to advancing UEGCL’s mandate. Governance milestones include a fully constituted board led by Eng. Proscovia M. Njuki and a move to the new Victoria Office Park headquarters.

Overall, this edition underlines UEGCL’s commitment to supporting national development, expanding electricity access, and ensuring the sustainability of its flagship projects while strengthening stakeholder collaboration.
