Electricity Exports rise 34 percent to Shs267b

Overview

Uganda’s electricity sector is experiencing strong growth, with export earnings rising by 34% to $72 million (Shs267 billion) between March 2025 and February 2026. This increase is driven by higher electricity production, with more power exported to neighboring countries like Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The boost is largely due to expanded generation capacity, especially after the completion of the Karuma Hydropower Dam, which has created a significant energy surplus. This surplus is positioning Uganda as a key player in the regional energy market and a potential manufacturing hub due to its competitive electricity tariffs.

Uganda is also preparing to join the Eastern Africa Power Pool, which will allow electricity to be traded more efficiently across the region, attracting investment and supporting economic growth.

Despite this progress, electricity access in Uganda remains relatively low, particularly in rural areas. The government aims to expand access and infrastructure, targeting universal electricity access by 2030.
