French Ambassador, H.E. Mrs. Virginie Leroy visits Nalubaale-Kiira Power stations
Overview
Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) hosted Her Excellency Mrs. Virginie Leroy, the Ambassador of France to Uganda, along with representatives from the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), the European Union, and technical teams, at the Nalubaale-Kiira Hydropower Complex.
The visit highlighted the enduring partnership between Uganda, France, and the EU in promoting sustainable energy infrastructure. The Nalubaale-Kiira rehabilitation project, supported with approximately EUR 170 million in financing from AFD, the European Investment Bank (EIB), and the EU, focuses on modernizing electromechanical systems, enhancing dam safety, and increasing spill capacity to manage extreme hydrological conditions.
Acting CEO George Tusingwire emphasized that the project strengthens resilience amid climate variability, particularly rising Lake Victoria levels. H.E. Mrs. Leroy expressed her satisfaction in visiting Uganda’s first hydropower plant, noting that the initiative reflects shared priorities of inclusive growth, energy access, and climate action.
The partnership ensures Uganda is better positioned to generate clean energy, safeguard downstream communities, and respond to climate change, with UEGCL committed to efficient, transparent, and environmentally responsible project delivery.
