GeNews Newsletter 10th Edition
Overview
The 10th issue of the GeNews Newsletter focuses on the re-transfer of the Nalubaale and Kiira Power Stations from Eskom Uganda Limited back to the government-owned Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL). The handover ceremony, held on March 27, 2023, marked the conclusion of a 20-year concession, signifying a major milestone in Uganda’s energy sector.
Nalubaale Power Station, with a capacity of 180 MW, is Uganda’s oldest hydropower facility, completed in 1953, while Kiira Power Station (200 MW) was commissioned in 2000 to address rising electricity demand. The re-transfer represents a strategic move to strengthen national control over critical energy infrastructure, ensuring reliable and sustainable power generation for the country.
