Overview
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni officially commissioned the 600 MW Karuma Hydropower Plant and its interconnection lines on September 26, 2024. Located in Kiryandongo District, it is Uganda’s largest power-generating facility and a key milestone toward the Vision 2040 goal of 52,000 MW. The plant features six 100 MW Francis turbines in East Africa’s largest underground power station. Constructed by Sinohydro Corporation at a cost of $1.7 billion (85% funded by EXIM Bank of China, 15% by the Ugandan government), the project includes three major transmission lines: Karuma–Kawanda (400kV), Karuma–Olwiyo (400kV), and Karuma–Lira (132kV).
