Namanve Power Plant Handed over to UEGCL
Overview
Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) has officially taken over operations of the 50MW Namanve Thermal Power Plant from Jacobsen Uganda Power Plant Company Limited (JUPPCL) in February 2022. The plant was built, operated, and transferred under a 13-year Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) agreement.
The transition is expected to deliver an 18% reduction in generation tariffs, with the government projected to save UGX 7.7 billion annually in the first three years and UGX 9 billion per year thereafter. The handover also strengthens UEGCL’s internal capacity to operate and maintain power plants using local staff, supporting sustainable and cost-effective energy generation.
