The Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) Annual Report for the 18-month period ended June 2017 outlines the company’s mandate, operations, governance structure, and progress in Uganda’s electricity generation sector.
UEGCL, established in 2001, is mandated to develop, acquire, operate, and maintain electricity generation facilities while promoting research and development in the power sector. The company is wholly owned by the Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development.
Guided by its vision of becoming the leading power producer in the Great Lakes Region, UEGCL remains committed to sustainably generating reliable, quality, and affordable electricity for socio-economic development. Its operations are driven by the core values of integrity, accountability, sustainability, innovation, and safety.
During the reporting period, UEGCL strengthened its institutional capacity by recruiting 74 new staff, increasing its workforce to 123 employees. The company continued to oversee major hydropower projects, including the 600MW Karuma Hydropower Project and the 183MW Isimba Hydropower Project, which are critical to increasing Uganda’s electricity generation capacity.
The report also highlights UEGCL’s commitment to quality management, stakeholder engagement, corporate governance, sustainability, and effective communication through both traditional and digital platforms. Overall, the company remained focused on delivering its mandate while supporting Uganda’s energy security and economic development goals.
