The Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) Annual Report 2013 highlights the company’s transition into a leading power generation and project implementation agency in Uganda. Established in 2001 and wholly owned by the Government of Uganda, UEGCL serves as the custodian of the country’s major hydropower assets, including the 180MW Nalubaale Hydropower Plant and the 200MW Kiira Hydropower Plant. During 2013, the company continued its transformation from primarily monitoring power generation concessions to actively implementing and managing large-scale electricity generation projects.
A key milestone in 2013 was the groundbreaking of the 600MW Karuma Hydropower Project, officiated by the President of Uganda. UEGCL also advanced the development of other strategic projects, including the 183MW Isimba Hydropower Project and the 840MW Ayago Hydropower Project, which are intended to significantly increase Uganda’s power generation capacity.
In addition to large hydropower developments, UEGCL progressed the development of smaller renewable energy projects such as the 44.7MW Muzizi Hydropower Project and the 4.5MW Nyagak III Hydropower Project. These initiatives support the company’s broader mandate of ensuring reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity supply.
The report underscores UEGCL’s vision of becoming a leading power producer in the region and its mission to generate reliable and affordable electricity that supports Uganda’s economic growth and national development. Through strategic investments, sound governance, and project implementation, UEGCL continued to strengthen its role in Uganda’s energy sector during 2013.
