Uganda Eyes Markets Beyond Borders to Supply Surplus Power. DM 27.1.26

Overview

Uganda’s electricity generation drive has created a significant power surplus, with installed capacity reaching 2,048 MW by December 2024, while peak demand stood at just 985 MW leaving a surplus of 1,063 MW. The completion of the 600 MW Karuma Hydropower Dam, Uganda’s largest hydropower investment to date, has been a key contributor and positions the country as a potential regional energy exporter.

Despite these gains, challenges remain. Access to electricity is uneven, with only 51.5% of the population connected, and rural electrification lagging at 42.4%. Transmission and distribution constraints, coupled with system losses of 17%, prevent some generated power from reaching consumers.

Looking forward, Uganda aims to scale installed capacity to 52,000 MW by 2040, leveraging government investment, private sector participation, and regional cooperation. The sector is also exploring innovative models to stimulate industrial demand, improve utilization, and expand cross-border electricity trade. These developments present significant opportunities for businesses, communities, and investors as Uganda transitions toward a modern, integrated power market.
