Nakawa VTC Students Embark on Educational Tour of Nalubaale-Kiira Hydropower Plant
Today, Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) had the pleasure of welcoming students from Nakawa Vocational Training College (VTC), specifically from the Department of Water Engineering, for an engaging and educational study tour of the Nalubaale Kiira Hydropower Complex located in Jinja. This hands-on learning experience was aimed at enriching the students’ understanding of water resource management and its critical role in sustainable hydropower generation.
The tour was expertly guided by Mr. Stephen Bameka from the Complex Technical Support Office, who provided in-depth explanations and demonstrations throughout the visit. A major focus of the session was on water management and the control systems necessary for optimizing hydropower production. Students were introduced to the intricate processes that UEGCL employs to regulate water inflows and outflows, and how these systems contribute to both energy efficiency and environmental stewardship.
Throughout the visit, the students gained a deeper appreciation for the delicate balance that must be maintained between power generation and ecological preservation. They learned about the operational challenges faced in water regulation, including seasonal variations, upstream water usage, and the growing impact of climate change. Mr. Bameka also discussed the various mitigation strategies and adaptive technologies used by UEGCL to ensure continuity, compliance, and environmental responsibility.
What made this experience particularly impactful was how theoretical knowledge from the classroom was directly applied to real-world scenarios. The students showed a high level of interest and enthusiasm, actively engaging with the material and asking insightful questions. It
was evident that the tour not only expanded their technical knowledge but also inspired a greater sense of purpose in their academic journey.
UEGCL is proud to support the next generation of water engineers by providing them with opportunities to experience practical applications of their studies. Educational engagements like this not only build technical capacity but also foster a deeper awareness of Uganda’s efforts in sustainable energy production.
