
President Museveni commissions Karuma Hydro Power Plant
The 600MW Karuma Hydro Power Plant was commissioned on September 26th, 2024 by H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in Kiryandongo District. The Karuma Hydro Power Plant Project was constructed by Sino Hydro Construction Company and handed over to Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by Ministers, Members of Parliament, and other distinguished guests.
During the ceremony, H.E. the President of Uganda appreciated the government of China for funding the construction of Karuma HPP and delivering high-quality work.
The Minister of Energy and Mineral Development Hon. Ruth Nankabirwa highlighted that “Uganda’s energy capacity has grown from 380MW in 2005 to over 2,000MW in 2024, including the 600MW from Karuma, bringing Uganda closer to its Vision 2040 target for 52,000 MW.”
The Karuma HPP Project faced challenges, including land acquisition, transmission line vandalism, and the delays caused by the Corona Virus Pandemic but persisted due to careful planning and coordination.
