UEGCL Reviews Progress of Emergency Spillway Repairs at Isimba  Hydropower Plant

May 19, 2026

Today, Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited convened a strategic technical meeting  with the contractor for the 183 MW Isimba Hydropower Plant, the Owner’s Engineer, and Prof.  Mark Alexander from the University of Cape Town to assess progress on the ongoing emergency  spillway repair works and agree on the next course of action.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the project stakeholders to review findings from recent  inspections, evaluate the status of ongoing interventions, and discuss both immediate and long term measures aimed at safeguarding the structural integrity and operational reliability of the  facility.

Key discussions focused on the urgent commencement of concrete coring, sampling, and  laboratory testing works to establish a comprehensive understanding of the condition of the  spillway structure. The stakeholders also explored a range of sustainable engineering solutions  that will guide the long-term rehabilitation and protection of the facility, ensuring its continued  safe operation for years to come.

During the engagement, UEGCL Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Dr. Harrison E. Mutikanga,  underscored the importance of timely action and close coordination among all project parties. He  emphasized the need to execute both the emergency underwater repairs and the emergency  spillway channel works concurrently to effectively mitigate emerging risks and maintain the  safety of the infrastructure.

Eng. Dr. Mutikanga noted that recent underwater inspections had revealed additional erosion on  the upstream side of the spillway, highlighting the urgency of implementing the recommended  interventions without delay. He further stressed that while immediate remedial works remain a  priority, equal attention must be given to identifying durable, long-term solutions that will  strengthen the resilience of the plant and protect this critical national asset.

The meeting reaffirmed UEGCL’s commitment to working collaboratively with technical experts  and project partners to ensure that all remedial works are undertaken in accordance with the  highest engineering and safety standards, while maintaining the reliable generation of electricity  for Uganda’s social and economic development.
