Overview

The Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) Annual Report for the year ended 31 December 2015 highlights the company’s progress in expanding Uganda’s electricity generation capacity and supporting national development through sustainable energy production.

UEGCL, established in 2001, is responsible for the operation and maintenance of power generation facilities and the development of new electricity generation projects. The company manages the 380MW Nalubaale-Kiira Hydropower Complex and serves as the Government of Uganda’s implementing agency for the 183MW Isimba Hydropower Project and the 600MW Karuma Hydropower Project, including associated transmission infrastructure.

Guided by its vision of becoming a leading power producer in the Great Lakes Region, UEGCL’s mission is to sustainably generate reliable, quality, and affordable electricity for socio-economic development. The company operates based on the core values of integrity, innovation, accountability, safety, and sustainability.

During 2015, UEGCL continued the development of major hydropower projects while also advancing smaller renewable energy initiatives, including the 44.7MW Muzizi Hydropower Project, 5.5MW Nyagak III Hydropower Project, and future projects such as Latoro, Agbinika, and Okulacere. These projects are intended to increase Uganda’s electricity supply and support economic growth.

The report emphasizes UEGCL’s commitment to operational excellence, corporate governance, stakeholder engagement, capacity building, and environmental sustainability. It also highlights the company’s role in promoting private sector participation, technical training, research, and consultancy services within the electricity generation sector to strengthen Uganda’s long-term energy security.
