The newly appointed Board of Directors of Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) has commenced engagements across the Company’s generation facilities through a three-day familiarization tour aimed at gaining deeper insights into operations, ongoing investments, maintenance activities, and the teams responsible for powering Uganda’s electricity generation.
The tour covered UEGCL’s key generation assets, including the 50MW Namanve Thermal Power Plant, 183MW Isimba Hydropower Plant, and the historical 380MW Kiira and Nalubaale Hydropower Stations, providing the Board with an opportunity to appreciate the Company’s diverse generation portfolio and its contribution to Uganda’s energy sector.
On Day 1
Board Visits Namanve Thermal Power Plant
The tour began at the 50MW Namanve Thermal Power Plant, where the Board received a safety induction from the Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) team, reaffirming UEGCL’s commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards across its facilities.
The Board later toured the plant to gain firsthand knowledge of its operations, key processes, and the important role Namanve plays in supporting reliable electricity supply in the country.
The visit concluded with an engagement session between the Board and plant staff. During the interaction, employees introduced themselves, after which the Chief Executive Officer formally presented the Board members.
Addressing staff, the Board Chairperson, Eng. Dr. Florence Lubwama Kiyimba, commended employees for their dedication and contribution towards advancing UEGCL’s mandate.
“Let us continue working together and giving our best. When UEGCL performs well, it reflects the commitment of every individual and strengthens the entire electricity sector,” the Board Chairperson remarked.
On Day 2
Board Receives Operational Updates at Isimba Hydropower Plant
The Board’s second engagement was at the 183MW Isimba Hydropower Plant, where they received comprehensive updates from the Projects and Operations & Maintenance teams on the plant’s performance, operational status, and ongoing activities.
The Board subsequently toured the facility, gaining firsthand insight into the plant’s operations and the systems in place to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient electricity generation.
The visit provided an opportunity for the Board to appreciate Isimba Hydropower Plant’s strategic role within UEGCL’s generation portfolio and engage with the teams responsible for maintaining the plant’s availability and performance.
On Day 3
Board Engages Staff at Kiira and Nalubaale Hydropower Stations
The final leg of the tour took the Board to the historic 380MW Kiira and Nalubaale Hydropower Stations, where they familiarized themselves with the stations’ operations, ongoing investments, and maintenance activities.
During the engagement, the Board commended staff for their commitment and dedication in sustaining the performance of these landmark facilities, which have played a significant role in Uganda’s electricity generation history.
The Board also recognized Graduate Trainees and Interns, applauding UEGCL’s continued commitment to developing future talent through training, mentorship, and practical workplace exposure.
The three-day familiarization tour reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to strengthening operational excellence, supporting staff development, and ensuring that UEGCL’s generation facilities continue to deliver reliable electricity to support Uganda’s socio-economic transformation.
